Happy Anniversary!

Video

This site was started 1 year ago to share about what I know and love.

How to use credit cards to earn your next trip?
How to travel in style with the least money?
Where are the good deals?
What gear am I using?
What membership cards are useful?
What mobile applications are making my life easier?

Here’s a video to wish this site Happy Anniversary with many more years to come.

[Mobile Application] United Airlines

Standard

Followers of my site will be aware that I will be flying with United Airlines to San Francisco on UA2 from Singapore today. So I have just taken United Airline’s mobile application on a spin and like it. It provides very clear information on your flight with them and that is good.

[Mobile Application] iChangi

Standard

Firstly, congratulations to Changi Aiport for winning Skytrax World’s Best Airport Award for four consecutive years. It is a place that can make a hardcore westlander like me travel all the way to east on my own accord.

Having stayed overnight at Changi Airport to wait for my morning flight a few times, I can really say that Changi Airport is a home away from home for travelers. There are just so many things that I can do other than staying in lounge. Walking around the 3 terminals to explore shops, cafes, restaurants, gardens, decorations, watch movies, play games on gaming console and powerpoints everywhere to charge gadgets. Most importantly, feel safe there.

So how do I get around in Changi Airport and get updated about my flight? (Like gate changes etc.) iChangi Mobile Application!

1 thing I hope to see in this application soon is integration of Changi Rewards membership management.

[Mobile Application] Perkd

Standard

Have shared about Stocard previously here and mentioned that I will cover another application Perkd. So what is different about Perkd?

Perkd Logo

Perkd Logo

Basic function remains. Both allow you to digitalize your membership cards. However, there are some additional functions in Perkd. It has a better experience in creating custom membership cards not available on their database compared to Stocard. You can capture image of membership card for custom membership cards in Perkd for easy identification.

Perkd Custom

Perkd Custom

Other than custom membership cards, Perkd also have merchants tie-up which is lacking in Stocard in Singapore. Perkd is official membership card platform for Timberland and The Body Shop. They will send out offers and track rewards using Perkd application. So if you frequent these shops, Perkd will be good for you.

Perkd also has a good collection of membership cards on their database. So you need not put in too much effort to do custom cards.

So how do I use Perkd and Stocard? I use Stocard just for Starbucks payment with my Sony SmartWatch 3 as it has wearable support and Starbucks Card barcode support which are not present on Perkd. (Update 27 March 2016: Developer of Perkd has reached out to update that Perkd now supports Starbucks card barcode and many others. Tested and works. But I still like to use SmartWatch to pay at Starbucks!) I use Perkd for almost all of my other membership cards.

[Mobile Application] Stocard

Standard

How many of you are carrying your Starbucks card with you physically or via Starbucks mobile application? Do you have an Apple Watch or Android Wear device? Pay at Starbucks using your smartphone with Starbucks mobile application is too mainstream. How about paying with your wearables? You can with Stocard.

Storcard is a mobile application created by a company based in Germany. It allows you to create barcode based virtual membership cards for easy portability on your mobile devices and wearables. Cards supported are grouped by Hotels & Airlines and Countries. It has a good collection of cards in Singapore.

Storcard is good as it supports Starbucks special barcode format for payment and wearables. However, it falls short in merchant collaboration when compared to application like Perkd which I will cover in future. Both Stocard and Perkd support Timberland and The Body Shop membership cards. But Timberland and The Body Shop both use Perkd as their official virtual card application. They will send offers to their members using Perkd and recognize membership cards and offer vouchers on Perkd platform.

Mobile applications like Stocard or Perkd can be very useful in reducing numbers of cards that you need to bring with you. However, do be careful of certain merchants (The Soup Spoon and Tangs.) that only recognize their own application’s virtual card.

[Mobile application] Cardable

Standard

You got a few credit cards/membership cards and having trouble keeping track of deals associated with each card? Here is a mobile application to the rescue.

Cardable Logo

Cardable Logo

What Cardable allows you to do is to select credit cards/membership cards that you own and see deals available based on that information and location. They have a pretty comprehensive list of cards available. Not just credit cards from most banks in Singapore but also membership cards like PAssion, SAFRA, NTUC PLUS!, Palate and the FAR CARD. Main benefit of this application over competing application is that this application allows you to zoom down to benefits associated with a specific card from a bank. So for ladies, you can just select UOB Lady’s card in Cardable and see deals for that only. (Cue slogan: The men don’t get it.)

Welcome to Have Cards Will Travel

Standard

Lot of friends know me as lobang king, mileage guy, credit card guy and many other nicknames. They will often ask about which credit card to get/use to maximize their returns and I do post on Facebook about using miles earned from credit cards to fly in premium cabins like SQ Business Class and Suites. (SG$38.50 + 31,875 miles vs SG$2,768.50 for Hong Kong one way Suites ticket on SQ sounds good? Savings of SG$2,730.) So after some thinking, I decide to set up this site to share more about:

  • Credit cards that I own. 25 and counting…
  • Travel reviews.
Airport, airport lounges and cabin products.
  • Membership cards.
Some deals are just not available with credit cards.
  • Mobile applications.
Some mobile applications can be life saver when I want to find deals or globetrotting.
  • Gear.
    Typical geek here.
  • Deals. (Duh…)
    What’s lobang king without deals.

Please note that posts here are not paid advertorials unless stated.

So before I end this post, will like to share this picture of a credit card that I own (No more…) which feature a mantra that I believe in.

Frank

I like the quote. But not the card anymore.
